I've had people tell me that if you go to the Southern part of the United States, and ask for a Coke, they'll ask you what kind. Down there, the word "coke" simply means what "pop" does to those in the Midwest, or what "soda" means to those on the West Coast. Odd question, but what do people on here call it? And where are you from? There was a map of poll results on this question that I tweeted on the Project:Informed Twitter page but the link that I retweeted seems to not be working... Vote in the poll above and discuss below. Vote on the home page as well! For me, and most everyone I know, it's called "pop". I live in Minnesota and "pop" is the standard word used for it up here.

Pop... it drives me nuts when people say soda.... Actually, that reminds me of when my sister first went out to Ohio for college. Everyone was teasing her about the Minnesota "accent" because they told her she said "MinnesOOOOOOda". But I guess that it is true that we pronounce our t's like d's sometimes.... although I have no clue where they get the super long O from....

Well try saying Minnesota with a hard "t". It just doesn't sound right at all!!

No, indeed. ;D Besides that, it takes too long to say when you're concentrating on your pronunciation.
Minnesotans talk fast in general, and say wanna, gonna, shoulda, coulda, yabetcha, etc. Actually, going back to Ohio, my mom and Sarah went into some sort of sub sandwich place (which they did have really good sandwiches, btw) and the people working there literally could not understand them. They kept saying "Slow down." And of course when they said that, they said it at ten words per minute, they spoke so slow.

I'm just like you guys, I speak really fast and say 'wanna' yabetcha' and stuff like that. Sometimes I find myself talking so fast that I trip over my words a lot and I start studdering and sounding like a fool. I also say Minnesota as if the t was a D. I guess Minnesota and Illinois speak alike!

Thanks, Josh. ;D I hardly ever say yabetcha, either, except when I feel like being an extreme Minnesotan. Yes, Sandy Pines, I too talk way too fast. Sometimes when I haven't seen people for along time or have a good story to tell I talk so fast. My mom usually tells me that she can't understand me.
